Curriculum
Fairyland Elementary’s core curriculum is based on the Georgia Department of Education Standards of Excellence and the Walker County Performance Standards. Grade level teachers write and create the curriculum based on the student’s needs and seek out additional programs to supplement the standards.
Fairyland practices the research-based Workshop Model for all reading, writing and mathematics classes. This is a highly effective model for motivating students, helping them understand and remember lessons. In this model students are introduced to new concepts during the lesson opening or mini-lesson. Students are then broken into groups to practice their work during “work time”. Finally, they are brought back together for a “lesson closing” to share with the class their work and new learning. In grades K-2 this model is supported with our new Reading Wonders Phonics Program.
S.T.E.A.M Programs – students are also taught STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) programs. This is taught at in the classroom, with the assistance of our Media Specialist and Computer Teacher, as well as our Aquaponics Greenhouse and Floating Learning Space (coming soon during 2018-2019 school year).
Word Journeys Spelling Curriculum – a differentiated approach to instruction where student are taught assessed based on their spelling level and then placed in groups. Students then are taught word families and spelling rules at their individual level.
Other teaching strategies and tools include, Thinking Maps, Touch Math, and Guiding Reading.
